South Africa's foot and mouth disease-free status reinstated

On 18 February 2014, Edith Vries, Director-general of the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, said the country’s three year long suspension of being a zone free of the disease had been lifted and South Africa’s foot and mouth disease-free status reinstated.

As part of the ongoing negotiations with the European Union in respect of the Economic Partnership Agreement which include South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, Swaziland, Mozambique and Angola, the EU applied in terms of the South African law (Section 15 of the Merchandise Marks Act), for the exclusive use of specific product descriptions in South Africa.

The application of the EU was published under Government Notice No 66 and 67 of 2014 in the Government Gazette (Gazette number 37296) dated 4 February 2014.

Die Nasionale Produsente Navorsingswerkgroep van Melk SA, het Maandag, 2 Desember sy eerste vergadering gehou. Die werkgroeplede is deur die MPO vanuit sy onderskeie streke genomineer. 

Hierdie werkgroep het vorendag gekom met navorsingsvoorstelle wat baie relevant is tot die primêre bedryf, wat ook die mededingendheid van die Suid-Afrikaanse suiwelbedryf in die geheel behoort te bevorder.

Milk Producers' Code of Practice released!

The Code of Practice for Milk Producers was recently released.

This initiative of the Dairy Standard  Agency, as funded by Milk South Africa, is aimed at supporting the South African primary dairy sector with compliance to all relevant food safety regulatory standards and voluntary standards.

The Code of Practice for Milk Producers is compiled as a systematic approach towards compliance with food safety requirements at primary production level and also address the minimum requirements for export certification at producer level.
